teaching mindfulness: In My Heart by Gitte Winter Graugaard

When I was touring different preschools in my area, trying to find the right one for my then three-year-old, I was surprised to hear the director of the school that would ultimately be my choice of schools say to me, "Okay, here is the room where we do our mindfulness practice."

"Mindfulness?"  I asked.  I had done a yoga class or two and made attempts in the past to meditate, but I had never heard of mindfulness, especially for preschoolers.  Mindfulness, I learned, is the use of meditation exercises to bring a sense of calm and a centered mindset.  Studies show it is good for helping kids' ability to focus on school tasks, and more importantly, helps kids feel more centered and less anxious in their daily lives. My preschooler now does mindfulness several times a week at school and loves it.

Having been newly educated on the merits of mindfulness and meditation for children, I was really interested to get a copy of The Children's Meditations In My Heart by Gitte Winter Graugaard.  Thanks to Room For Reflection Publishing for sending me a copy!

There's no denying that the Danish way of living is having it's year - from getting cozy with hygge or the many popular books and articles on Danish parenting.  I feel like this Danish popularity is well-earned.  The Danes seem to have a knack for fostering creativity, a love of nature, and lots and lots of quality family time which are all things that promote a greater sense of self-esteem and lessen anxiety in kids.

Author Graugaard is bringing some of that Danish parenting knack to bedtime with her book of meditations for parents and kids to do together to promote easier  and peaceful bedtimes.  According to Graugaard, she used to have the typical standoff with her daughters every night.  You know the one - some one is either:

  1. thirsty
  2. has itchy pajamas
  3. is scared of the dark
  4. why did he get two stories but I got only one?
  5. where is my stuffed bear?

She noticed that when she sat down with her daughters at bedtime and led them in a meditation, the nighttime drama was gone.

"When I started sharing beautiful heart meditations with my daughters, I was surprised to see how much they loved the interaction and how quickly they would fall asleep.  As different as children are, almost every child delights in hearing about how much a parent or caregiver loves and treasures them."

IMG_0487.JPG

The book features four sections each filled with pages of meditation exercises for the parent to read to the child at bedtime.  What I find so unique about this book is how it focuses not only on mindfulness and meditation as a way to calm bedtime anxiety but also how it focuses on love as a way to calm anxiety.  So many times, I get so busy with laundry, dirty dishes, and field trip permission forms, and forget to make sure I am showering enough love on my kids.  This book came at the right time for me, and I hope these meditations of love become an everyday part of our bedtime routine.

for beatles fans both big and small

Are you a Beatles fan?  Here is a book that you absolutely NEED in you collection - The Beatles Were Fab (And They Were Funny) by Kathleen Krull and Paul Brewer with pictures by Stacy Innerst.

"From the time they got together as lads until they became superstars, the Fab Four made music, made history, and made people laugh."

There are about one million books about the Beatles.  Why do you need one more, right? Well, I feel like if you are going to write a book on a well-worn subject like the Beatles, you need to find a unique take on the subject, and this book definitely does that.  The story follows the same line of following the Fab Four through their climb to fame and the pop charts, but what makes it different from other Beatles books is its focus on humor and how important the ability to laugh and make jokes was to the band.  As the title says, the Beatles were really, really funny people.  This is a great read for Beatles fans, but I think there is a lesson in there somewhere for us all, too.  Laughter and a good sense of humor is so valuable in helping us enjoy the good moments and survive the bad moments.

talking to our kids about refugees: lost and found cat, the true story of kunkush's incredible journey

June 6, 2017 ashley donati

How do you approach difficult subjects with your kids?  It can be hard to find just the right vocabulary to use for young kids so that they will fully comprehend what you want them to know.  It can also be hard to know just how much information to give - not too much for them to handle but not so little that they don't get the full picture of what is happening.

I like to find a good book on whatever difficult subject I need to discuss with my child.  The book helps me in several ways.  If I pick a book that I know is age-appropriate, then I know just how much information I should be giving.  I can just follow the book's lead.  Also, sometimes picture books can convey information to kids in a way that just talking can't, especially a book with great illustrations.

The topic of refugees is a tough one.  I think it is important for my kids to understand that there are people in the world right now who are going through the horrific experience of losing their homes and families, who are having to start their lives over in a foreign land every day.  They need to know to show these people compassion and friendship.  At the same time, I find it hard to, in a sense, break their innocence bubble.  I wish the world wasn't such a tough place and that they could stay blissfully unaware that evil exists.  But that can't happen.  It's my job to teach these little minds to be world citizens.

If you are like me, and you want to teach your kids about the hard life of a refugee but also don't want to have the story be too much, too scary, too violent, then Lost and Found Cat by Amy Shrodes and Dough Kuntz is a great book for you.

The family in this story must leave their home in Iraq because it has become too dangerous.  They cannot bring too many personal belongings because they will have to carry them on their long journey, but they can't bear to leave their beloved pet cat, Kunkush, behind.  They hide him in a basket and do their best to keep him hidden and quiet.  When the family makes it to Greece, Kunkush escapes from the basket, and they can't find him before they must leave on a bus for the next leg of their journey.  Volunteers help the family to find Kunkush and reunite him with his family.

recommended age: 4-12, all ages can enjoy this

themes: teaches compassion and world-awareness, highlights hope and love of the family

gets brownie points for: creating a story that is relevant in our world and doesn't sugar-coat the hardships of refugees but also not too sad or scary for kids and ends on a heart-warming, hopeful note.

the madeline legacy continues!

February 15, 2017 ashley donati

Did you grow up reading about the twelve little girls in two straight lines, and that old house that they lived in, covered with vines?  I treasured my Madeline books, so I was curious when I saw that Madeline author, Ludwig Bemelmans, had a grandson who was taking up the Madeline torch and continuing the stories.

You never know when a remake is going to be great or going to be something you wish never happened as to not tarnish the image of the original in your mind. (I'm looking at you, sequel to To Kill A Mockingbird.)  I love the originals so much that reading a new Madeline story had me a bit nervous.  But, rejoice!  I liked them, and my preschooler found them just as entertaining as the originals.

John Bemelmans Marciano is the grandson of the original author, and he has written three new Madeline stories: Madeline in Rome, Madeline at the White House, and this one, Madeline and the Old House in Paris.

In this story, Lord Cucuface, that meddlesome, snooty-tooty, sometimes mean Head of School, pays the girls a visit.  While he is inspecting the place, he discovers a beautiful, old telescope and decides to take it home.

With the telescope gone,  the girls start to hear strange, ghastly noises coming from the attic.  They investigate to find that the ghost of a scientist haunts their house, and he wants his telescope back!  Fortunately, he is a friendly ghost, and Madeline and Pepito (the bad hatted boy next door) hatch a plan to get that telescope back!

I found the writing style with its bouncy fun rhymes to be just like the originals, maybe even, dare I say it, a little better because it was a tad more on the modern side.  It used the type of language we use today, so my preschooler understood the rhymes better.  The illustrations aren't quite as detailed as the originals, but they still bring us into that Madeline, Parisian world.  We really enjoyed it.

the opposite zoo by il sung na

December 2, 2016 ashley donati

"'Whimsy' is a word that runs rampant in the description of children's literature, but Il Sung Na's picture books certainly merit the label." - The New York Times

Artist Il Sung Na is the creator of many new children's books that are soon to be beloved classics.  In his newest work, The Opposite Zoo, you will find the classic book of opposites with an artistic, charming twist.  Like most simple preschooler-level books aimed at teaching opposites, this features pages illustrating black and white, quiet and loud, awake and asleep.  Where this book breaks away from the others is in the Crayola-on-steroids colorful artwork that brings a playful and cutely charismatic tone to the story.

Story Time Conversation:

  • What animal at the zoo is your favorite?  Why?
  • Which opposite do you feel like today?  Noisy or quiet?  Bold or shy?
  • On each page, act out the word.  Act asleep.  Now act awake.  Act tall.  Now act short.
  • Look around the room.  Can you spy an opposites?  (For us, one lamp was on, and another lamp was off.)
  • recommended age: 2-4
