take a look at the little free library program!

February 16, 2016 ashley donati

Have you heard of the Little Free Library program?  We have several little libraries in public playground areas around our town, and I am in love with the idea so much that I've decided to install one in my front yard for kids in my neighborhood. Here are some facts about these wonderful little libraries that spread the book love to all!

  • Anyone can bring their gently used, unwanted books to the library, and anyone can take a book from the library.
  • The Little Free Library program was started in 2009 in Wisconsin and was inspired by Andrew Carnegie's push for over 2,000 free libraries around the country as well as other grass roots efforts to promote literacy around the world.
  • Their missions statement: To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.
  • As of the start of 2016, the program has over 35,000 registered libraries across the country.

To find a little library near you or to start one of your own, go to littlefreelibrary.org.  The website also has some really inspiring stories about how having free ready access to books shaped and changed their communities.  I will let you know how my front yard little free library turns out!
