Alf Wight, more famously known by his pen name James Herriot, was a veterinarian in the English countryside. He is best known for his work All Creatures Great and Small which was later adapted into a t.v. series. Herriot's stories are all seemingly biographical and tell tales of the animals he cared for as a vet.

The Christmas Day Kitten begins with a call from a neighboring farm where a stray cat has come to give birth to her kittens. The farmers can tell that she is ill, and they call Herriot for his assistance. (Spoiler but also warning if the subject of death is a sensitive one for your readers) The mother cat dies, but her kitten survives thanks to the vet, and she is treasured by the farmers and is from then on known as the Christmas day kitten.

If you enjoy this book, Herriot has written tons more of them! They all have the same slow and calm pacing, British culture, and any animal lover would find them entertaining.
