one of our favorite new books: dance is for everyone by andrea zuill

August 9, 2017 ashley donati

Do you have a little ballerina in your life? One that lives in her tutu and leotard even when it isn't a dance lesson day?  Do you know a child, especially a little boy, that thinks that they can't dance or don't belong in a ballet class?  You need to read Dance is For Everyone by Andrea Zuill.

This story is about what happens when a 450 pound alligator shows up in a ballet class one day and wants to learn to dance. At first, the students and teacher don't know what to think or do.  They'd never had such a different type of student in their dance school before.  The alligator, later named Tanya, is so enthusiastic about ballet and so happy to dance that everyone overlooks their differences and looks for ways to work together to put on the best ballet show ever!

We loved everything about this book.  The story is really funny. (Have you ever seen an alligator try to do a ballet twirl?)  I love the message of inclusiveness and acceptance, especially at the end, when instead of changing the alligator to fit in with the class, the class learns to find a place for Tanya's strengths.

Andrea Zuill's illustration style is so charming and adds so much character and humor to the story.  This is Andrea's second children's book.  If you want to learn more about the author and her books, check out her website here.

new book alert: happy dreamer by peter h. reynolds

April 6, 2017 ashley donati

Thank you Scholastic for providing me a copy of Happy Dreamer for review!

Great new book alert!  Have you ever given the Dr. Seuss classic, Oh The Places You'll Go, as a gift?  It's the perfect, inspirational gift for a loved one who is ending one phase of life and starting another making it an easy choice for baby showers and graduations of all stages from kindergarten to college.  Happy Dreamer by Peter H. Reynolds is sure to become the same classic and inspirational book gift for generations to come.

This book is all about possessing the bravery to put real value in your dreams, whatever they may be, and putting those dreams into action to live a happy life.  I like that the story emphasizes that not every person's path to living out their happy is going to lead in the same direction.  We all follow our dreams in different ways.  This is such a helpful message to give kids today in a world that makes it very easy to compare ourselves to others, measuring their success next to ours.  We all reach our goals differently and on different time lines.  Happy Dreamer promotes love and the freedom to live a creative life.

I was so excited when I was approached to participate in the launch of Happy Dreamer because my kids and I are big, big fans of Peter H. Reynolds and his work.  The Dot and Ish are both faves at my house.  So, when Happy Dreamer came in the mail, we ripped the box open and immediately sat down to read it.  My four year old loved the colorful pictures and fun story.  I loved the encouraging message.

Here an interview with the author about the book on this podcast .

new adventures with bruce the bear! hotel bruce by ryan t. higgins

October 4, 2016 ashley donati

I was so excited when publishers Disney-Hyperion asked my to promote the newest adventure with Bruce the Bear, Hotel Bruce.  You know that I only share books that me and my kids absolutely love, and we thought that the first Bruce book - Mother Bruce - was a total hoot!

In the first book, Bruce is a culinarily-adventurous bear who loves to try out fancy and delicious recipes, and of course, he seeks out locally-sourced ingredients from his forest home.  When he gets some fresh goose eggs for his latest recipe, he wasn't expecting them to hatch!  Bruce reluctantly has to learn how to be a dad to his new gosling babies.

In Ryan T. Higgins' new book, Bruce and his gosling kids return from their annual winter migration holiday to the beach to find that three mice have moved into Bruce's home and turned it into a hotel!  Well, obviously, this did not sit well with Bruce.  There were animals in his bed, animals in his bathroom, animals in his kitchen, animals everywhere he turned!  After lots of shenanigans, Bruce finally gets his home to himself once again, and peace and quiet returns.

I am so happy that Higgins is bringing Bruce back for more fun.  His character is lovably grumpy.  His love for his gosling babies is adorable.  The story and the illustrations are full of laugh-out-loud funny moments for kids and the adults who read with them.  Hotel Bruce comes to stores October 18. recommended age: 4 - 10
